About
LECIS...
LECIS (Laboratory Equipment
Control Interface Specification)
defines a uniform, device vendor-neutral remote control interface
for laboratory instruments. In 1998, LECIS became an ASTM
(American Society for Testing and Materials) standard. The official
ASTM standard designation for LECIS is ASTM E1989-98. Information
on how to obtain a copy of the official ASTM standard document can
be found under Reference Materials in the Downloads
section.
Over the last six years or so, the laboratory
automation industry has moved more and more towards a network-aware,
object-oriented device control paradigm. As a result, an effort to
develop a distributed, object-oriented version of LECIS was started
in 2000. This effort was spearheaded by OMG's
(Object Management Group) Life
Sciences Research Domain Taskforce. In 2002, this OMG standardization
effort resulted in a CORBA-based
(Common Object Request Broker Architecture) version of LECIS. Besides
allowing for distributed, deterministic, computing platform-independent,
vendor-neutral, object-oriented control of any type of laboratory
device, the OMG LECIS standard was also expected to address some of
the shortcomings of the older ASTM LECIS standard. In Q4 of 2002,
the OMG LECIS Finalization Taskforce completed its work on the CORBA
LECIS standard. This new standard is currently undergoing a final
editorial review within the OMG. We expect that the OMG CORBA LECIS
standard will be officially released in Q2 of 2003. In the meanwhile,
a pre-release
version of this upcoming OMG CORBA LECIS standard can be downloaded
here.
The original OMG LECIS RFP is available here.
